"Kangaroo, you fine marsupial
Carry your baby in a built-in pocket
Momma's got a playpen. Momma's got a cradle
And all she's got to do is
Hop to rock it!"

Mouse over the kangaroo to make it hop. -->

A MARSUPIAL is type of mammal whose female carries its baby in a pouch.
Marsupials include kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, Tasmanian devils, koalas, and opossums.
Most of the world's marsupials live in Australia. The opossum is the only marsupial that makes its home in North America.
Kangaroos can't walk backwards!
Moving forward, they've been clocked as fast as 40 MPH!
Baby kangaroos are called "joeys".
Male kangaroos are called "boomers".*
Female kangaroos are called "flyers"**
A group of kangaroos is called a "mob"***
Most kangaroos eat plants, mainly grasses. The tiny Rat Kangaroo also eats insects and worms. Yum.

It's pretty easy to see why they call it a rat kangaroo, huh?

*They're also sometimes called 'bucks" or "jacks", but we like "boomers" best.
**Females are also called "does" and "jills".
***Groups of kangaroos are also called "troops" and "herds".
